Terms of taking part
These terms cover meeting people through Tribe Locals: what we do, what we do not do, and who is responsible for what. They apply to Locals and to anyone who contacts one. Version 2026-09-09.
Tribe Locals is run by Tribe Bikes Pty Ltd (ABN 33 640 644 757), Unit 4 / 18 Accolade Avenue, Morisset NSW 2264. In these terms “Tribe”, “we” and “us” mean Tribe Bikes Pty Ltd. A “Local” is someone who owns a Tribe bike and has a profile here. A “visitor” is anyone who contacts a Local through this site.
1. Read this part if you read nothing else
- Tribe introduces people. We are not there, we do not supervise, and we are not part of what happens when you meet.
- Locals are ordinary bike owners, not our staff, not dealers, and not trained instructors.
- Whether anyone rides anyone else’s bike is entirely up to the owner, and nobody has to offer.
- Never carry someone else’s child on a bike, and never let anyone else carry yours. This one is not negotiable and it is the rule we will remove someone for breaking.
- You take part at your own risk, and you are responsible for what you do.
2. What Tribe Locals is, and is not
Tribe Locals is an introduction service. We show you people near you who own the bike you are curious about, and we pass messages between you without either of you seeing the other’s phone number. That is the whole of what we do.
We do not:
- attend, arrange, supervise or take part in any meeting;
- choose where or when you meet, or who you meet;
- inspect anybody’s bike, equipment, home or vehicle;
- check anyone’s identity beyond confirming a working mobile number, or run background, licence or criminal checks on anyone;
- train, certify or supervise Locals;
- guarantee that anything a Local tells you is accurate.
A Local is not our employee, agent, contractor, partner or representative, and cannot make promises on our behalf. Points earned through this program are a thank-you for helping, not wages, and do not make anyone our worker. Nothing a Local says forms part of any contract you have with Tribe, and nothing they say changes the warranty on a bike.
3. Meeting someone
You are meeting a stranger from the internet. Sensible things, which we expect everyone to do:
- Meet in a public place, in daylight. A park, a café, a car park.
- Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back.
- Do not go to anyone’s home, and do not invite anyone to yours.
- Bring someone with you if you would rather.
- Either of you can end the meeting at any moment, for any reason or none, and neither of you owes the other an explanation. Nothing in this program obliges you to stay somewhere you do not want to be.
Everyone taking part must be at least 18. If you are bringing children, they are your responsibility at all times, and section 5 applies.
If someone makes you uncomfortable, block them and tell us. Locals can block any sender from their conversation, and we will remove anyone from the program over behaviour, on either side.
4. Riding a bike that is not yours
No Local has to let anybody ride their bike. Plenty will show you the bike, let you sit on it, and answer everything you want to ask without you ever riding it, and that is a complete and normal visit. If you are the owner and you would rather not, say so; you are not letting anyone down and it does not affect your points.
If a ride does happen, then:
- The rider must be legally allowed to ride, sober, and not affected by anything that impairs them.
- A helmet is required by law in every Australian state and territory. No helmet, no ride. An ill-fitting borrowed helmet is not a good helmet.
- The rider must follow the road rules, ride within their ability, and stay where the owner agrees.
- These are heavy bikes that handle unlike anything else. Start in an open space away from traffic, unloaded.
- The owner decides the terms: where, how long, and whether at all. They may ask for identification first. That is their call.
- The rider is responsible for the bike while they are on it, including damage, loss and anything that happens to anyone else.
5. Children and passengers
This is the section we care about most, because these are bikes built to carry children.
- Never carry a child who is not yours. Not around the block, not across the car park, not with the parent watching.
- Never let anyone else carry your child. If you want your child to feel the bike, you ride it.
- Never carry any passenger, adult or child, on a bike you are riding for the first time.
- Whoever is riding is responsible for every passenger on that bike, and for restraints, helmets and seating being right.
Breaking either of the first two rules will get someone removed from the program.
6. Damage, loss and theft
If a bike or anything else is damaged, lost or stolen at a meeting, that is a matter between the people involved. Tribe is not a party to it, does not insure it, does not mediate it and will not compensate anyone for it.
If you are lending your bike to someone, understand that you may be relying on that person to make it right. Consider whether that is a risk you want to take before you offer.
7. Insurance
Your insurance is your own responsibility, and you should not assume you have cover. Home and contents policies often exclude a bike away from the home, and public liability cover in a home policy may not extend to an activity connected with a business or a reward. If it matters to you, ring your insurer, describe what you are actually doing, and get the answer before you do it. Tribe does not provide insurance to Locals or visitors and does not extend any policy of ours to you.
8. What Locals say
Locals share their own experience of owning a bike. That is the point of the program and it is genuinely useful. It is not professional, mechanical, safety, medical or legal advice, and it is not our advice.
For load limits, fitting, servicing, child seats and anything to do with safe use, rely on the manufacturer’s manual and on us, not on a conversation. If a Local tells you something about a bike that matters to your decision, check it with hello@tribebikes.com.au before you rely on it.
9. Your responsibility to us
You take part at your own risk. To the fullest extent the law allows, you agree that you are responsible for your own acts and omissions while taking part, and that you will not hold Tribe responsible for loss, damage or injury arising from:
- anything that happens at or on the way to or from a meeting;
- anyone riding or handling a bike;
- the conduct, statements or condition of any other participant;
- any arrangement you make with another participant.
If a claim is made against Tribe because of something you did or failed to do while taking part, you agree to cover us for that claim, including reasonable costs. This does not apply to the extent the claim was caused by our own negligence or breach, or to the extent the law does not allow it.
10. Reporting something that went wrong
Tell us within 7 days: hello@tribebikes.com.au or 02 5018 7423. If someone is hurt or in danger, call 000 first and tell us afterwards.
We will investigate, and we may suspend or remove anyone while we do. We can remove anyone from the program at any time, and we do not have to give a reason, though we usually will.
11. Your account and what you tell us
By taking part you confirm that:
- you are at least 18;
- what you tell us about yourself, and what a Local puts on their profile, is accurate and kept up to date;
- you will not use the site to do anything unlawful, deceptive or harmful, and will not use bots or scripts on it;
- you will keep your sign-in to yourself and tell us if someone else gets into your account.
We can change, suspend or withdraw the site at any time. If we shut Tribe Locals down we will give reasonable notice, and the notice period for points is in the rewards terms.
12. Your photos and what you write
Your photos and your story stay yours. Putting them on your profile lets us show them on Tribe Locals so people near you can find you, for as long as your profile is up.
If we want to use one of your photos anywhere else, on tribebikes.com.au, in an email, in an ad or on social media, we will ask you first, for that use. You can say no and stay in the program, and it makes no difference to your points. If you say yes and later change your mind, tell us and we will stop using it going forward, though we cannot always pull something back that has already been printed or shared.
Do not upload a photo of someone else without their agreement, and do not upload photographs of children other than your own. We will take down anything that breaches that.
Messages between you and another participant are private and are not covered by this section.
13. Text messages
This program runs on SMS. By taking part you agree to receive texts from Tribe Bikes about your conversations, meetings and points. Message frequency depends on how much you use it.
Reply STOP to any message to stop them, and you will get one confirmation and nothing further. Reply HELP for who we are and how to reach us. Your carrier’s message and data rates may apply. Neither party ever sees the other’s number: every message goes through us.
Messages are checked by an automated system before they are sent, and one the system rates as abusive is held for a person at Tribe to read and decide on instead of being delivered. Our privacy notice says what that system sees. Texts are not sent overnight in your time zone; they wait for the morning.
14. Your rights under Australian Consumer Law
Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or modifies any guarantee, right or remedy you have under the Australian Consumer Law or any other law that cannot be excluded. Where we are permitted to limit our liability for something, we limit it to resupplying the service or paying the cost of having it resupplied. Where the law does not permit us to limit or exclude liability, we do not.
If any part of these terms turns out to be unenforceable, the rest still applies.
15. Changes
We can change these terms. If we change something that matters we will ask Locals to read and accept the new version before they carry on, and the current version is always shown at the top of this page. These terms are governed by the law of New South Wales.
